NaPoWriMo 2021 & Poem – Sanctuary

Greetings and salutations!

(I know, I know – a blog post on a Monday? Shocking… Ok, I fully intended to get it up this past weekend, but the presence of three different big school events in the space of 48 hours rather hampered me from that goal. However, here I am now! So, enjoy this novelty of a blog post on a week day… :D)

Today is gloriously sunny, everything is blooming, and I’m fully convinced that summer has arrived in the PNW. You cannot convince me otherwise (until it starts pouring with rain again) and I am very happy. I’m also less than 3 weeks out from finishing my semester, and it’s less than 4 weeks until I go home – both joyous prospects indeed! Aaaand it’s also April which means it’s National Poetry Writing Month!

If you’re a long time follower of my blog, you’ll know that this is not the first time I have participated in NaPoWriMo – in fact, it is my third. It’s pretty simple actually: 30 poems in 30 days. I really appreciate this writing challenge because it forces me to write consistently, something that I’m not always the best at. So, here I am – over 1/3 of the way through NaPoWriMo 2021! And I figured I should probably update you guys so that: A. You know what’s up up in my writing life, and B. I have some accountability so that I actually produce said 30 poems. 😀

How’s it going so far? Well, not too awful actually. I still need to write today’s poem, but I have 11 poems done so far! I did get 7 poems out of a project that I produced for a class last week, so I’ve been slightly living in the glory of that. But now I’m going to get back to the whole ‘daily-writing’ thing, which will be good. So yep, all in all it’s been a good start to NaPoWriMo for me, and I’m excited to share with you how it all goes down in the coming weeks! 🙂

Ok, that’s enough updating for one week. 😀 Would you like to read one of my NaPoWriMo poems? The one I’m about to share with you is actually the first one I wrote this month. Tis the season for blossoms, and my campus is full of them, much to my delight. So, surprise, surprise – I wrote a poem (called ‘Sanctuary’) about them. I hope you enjoy! 🙂

Dance with me beneath the apple boughs

heavy with blossom and bee, blushing white

and quiet pink, bowing at the sight of sun

peeking rosy cheeks between fragrant firs.

Let us spin beneath an ever-widening sky,

scattered warm and blue above our heads.

Let us touch the corners of the world with eager hands,

twirling like swallows in the dusky air.

Let us tread lightly on scattered petals like incense

nestled, blooming sweet and silent.

And that just about wraps up my first NaPoWriMo post of 2021 – thanks for coming along for the ride! I’ll be back this weekend to update you on my poetry adventures. For now I’m going to go grab dinner, do all the homework I should’ve done this weekend but didn’t, write a poem, and generally enjoy the sunshine. See y’all soon! 🙂

  1. I like this poem! I sense calm, smell blossoms, see color and beauty, and a freedom from cares as one spins, twirls and dances in this sanctuary. Liked your use of alliteration too!
